I’m always on the lookout for novel proteins for my dog, who eats between 7-12 different proteins each week. One of his favorites on rotation is goat meat. However, I rarely add it for myself.
However, this past week my local small grocery happened upon ground goat from a supplier I buy other meats from. I figured I’d try it and found that Goat Chili was actually the ABGA National Show Tasting & Recipe Contest winner!
Though my own version of the chili recipe varies from the contest winner, I can highly recommend goat meat for a tasty and nutritious alternative:
Goat & Beef Chili
- 1 lb. ground goat meat
- 1 lb. ground beef
- Cumin (to taste)
- Worcestershire sauce
- Cajun spice seasoning (to taste)
- Garlic – 3 cloves
- 1 large red onion, diced
- Fire roasted diced tomatoes – one can
- Refried black beans – one can
- Kidney beans – one can
- Red chili flakes (to taste)
Brown the meat and onions, add Worcestershire sauce and cumin until browned. Add all other ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer at least one hour, but the longer the better.
I serve with shredded cheddar cheese, guacamole or avocado slices, sour cream dollop. This recipe makes enough for me to eat for a couple of days and then freeze the rest for later in winter.
